I knew him quite well. I feel blessed to have been his oldest grandson.
Granddaddy, as is the case with everyone, did have his faults. He was both very gullible and very obsessive. He was not, as that magazine writer suggested, any kind of an 'idiot'. Maybe I was somewhat young to evaluate the feelings of people in Lewisburg, but I generally felt that he was treated with a good deal of respect in his interactions with townspeople. Granddaddy was probably considered somewhat eccentric, but in my eyes he was one of the greatest people I knew.
The term 'idiot' is used in reference of someone who lacks intelligence. My granddad read and wrote much of his time. Although, some of his articles in the Pulaski Citizen might have been considered 'out there', few would have missed reading his 'Moment of Truth' column. When the urge struck to write an article about old times, he was a master story teller. Many of his articles had as there subject this nation's track toward socialism. Many of his predictions have been born out, more seem to be on the horizon.
No, my Granddaddy was no idiot. He was, in fact, intelligent, honest, caring, giving, fun, and energetic. Maybe, part of his fun nature was that he was an eccentric. I was certainly blessed to have spent a lot of time with him as a kid. I miss him.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02849907141924517116noreply@blogger.com
