One of my favorite cases!
At about 11 pm on June 22, 1977, gold prospector Albert Smith noticed three lights in the sky. Silently and slowly they moved down toward him and then nestled in a clump of trees near his camp. He saw figures emerge amid dazzling lights.
Thus began the most incredible two days in the life of 45 year old Albert Smith, the two days in which he claims he was visited by people from another world at his lonely camp on the Bulloo River in far southwest Queensland.
Smith is not Albert's real name. But that's what we said we would call him when he agreed reluctantly to an interview last week.
He claims he spoke to the visitors, watched them play games with what appeared to be lightning balls, saw them disappear and then reappear and stood spellbound as the intergalactic travelers created instantaneous rain.
Last week Albert recalled his meeting with the 35 men and women from a place they called Begus.
He said it was in near freezing weather yet the women were wearing summer type clothing. The men were dressed in what looked like gray business mens suits. They all appeared very human but their skin was a blue-grey color. Their craft was about 50 meters high, each with five supporting legs.
The leader said his name was Behnar. When I touched him it felt like I was touching very soft rubber.
When I asked them questions they seemed to know what I was going to say before I said it. And I think they only permitted me to ask what they wanted me to. I'm sure they had control of my mind for those two days.
I think their powers were almost limitless.
Albert said the aliens could speak English but only in whispered tones. They appeared to be able to communicate with their hands as well.
Only a few of them stayed near the camp. The rest went down to the river.
One woman told me she was 490 years old. She looked it too; like a mummy from some sort of Egyptian tomb.
At one stage they all started to play a game with hundreds of these balls which seemed to throw out lightning.
These people could leap 60 meters in one jump.
When they left the only thing that remained was a very heavy smell of kerosene. There were no marks or objects left to prove their existence.
Just before they finally disappeared the leader told me he was going to make rain. A short time later it suddenly started to pour. It was eight days before the rain stopped.
I wanted to see their craft taking off but again I think they controlled me.
I was lying in bed and could not get up. It seemed like I had 100 kilograms of lead in my legs.
The June visit was the fourth experience Albert has had with visitors from outer space since he began prospecting in the area five years ago.
In the winter of 1973 he saw a fleet of 16 spacecraft hover over the area and then move away.
In May the following year he approached a cigar-shaped craft hovering above the ground. He saw men in the cockpit and a woman at one of the windows. It sped away in what appeared to be a flash of light. And in June 1976 another brilliantly illuminated craft appeared.
Albert said, "I have not yet approached the authorities about this. A lot of other things happened which I don't want to talk about at this stage. No one will believe me until I get proof and that's what I intend to get as soon as I possibly can.
I will be going back to the area in late February but this time I will have a camera. I have begun to to document all these experiences.
I am very scared and frightened about going back but they did not harm me the first time. I hope they won't if they visit me again.

Long before recorded history, the Loyalhanna Creek formed a gorge through the foothills of the Laurel Highlands between what is now Latrobe and Ligonier. The hills and creek bed are littered with the rough remains of thousands of years of erosion on sandstone, and the natural beauty of this area is nothing less than majestic. In all seasons the trees, the rocks and the scenery intrigue travelers on Route 30.
The highway is divided in that stretch in two lanes east and two lanes west. The Sleepy Hollow crossing, halfway between where the road splits and rejoins, is a quick way to change direction. The causeway is also a good place to stop and linger for summer picnics or for fishing clear waters.
At around 11:30 p.m. May 15, 1988 Sam Sherry of Ligonier RD1 pulled into the area to go night fishing, like he'd done many times before.
"As soon as I got out of my car I could sense something was wrong," he told the Scene magazine "I could sense something there, something unusual and it was watching me."
Sherry has been training coonhounds for years and considers himself a seasoned outdoorsman.
"I've been in the woods for 50 years, and I know everything in the woods," he said. "If I see a track, I know what animal made it."
But, he didn't know what was making a commotion near the causeway. There was also a bad odor in the air. Curious, he turned on a big flashlight and found himself looking into a pair of red glowing eyes.
That night, Sherry's half century in the woods didn't do him any good. This wasn't a bear. It wasn't a big cat, nor a dog, nor anything he'd ever seen before. He said, "The face was pretty much human looking, but it looked real old and wrinkled. The lips were puckered up, and it didn't have any teeth. It was breathing real noisy, wheezing and slobbering and spitting and this wheezing going on down in its chest."
They were just 25 feet apart, and man and creature began taking steps closer to each other. Then Sherry turned to go back to his car, but by then the creature was so close that he could feel its breath on his neck and smell the terrible odor, like rotten fish.
"It brushed up against me, into my elbow, and it grabbed at my clothes and let go," he said. Just before Sherry got into the car, the creature put its arms on Sherry's shoulders, then dropped them. The man got into the car and the creature continued to stand there, very erect. As Sherry pulled away, he could see it raise one arm.
Two years later, he can laugh about that gesture, "I thought he was waving bye-bye," Sherry said, "but I learned that a lot of people say that they'll put one arm up."
"They" are the Bigfoot creatures, and Sam Sherry,, until then an unbeliever, drove away knowing that he'd seen something well beyond unusual.
"While I was standing there studying the creature, it occurred to me that I had a problem, that I can't tell this to anybody because nobody would believe this," he said.
But he soon told the story to someone who told him about Stan Gordon, director of the Pennsylvania Association for the Study of the Unexplained based in Greensburg. Gordon came out to the site and so did John Micklow, a retired Latrobe police officer who volunteers with PASU.
What Sherry said he saw was nothing new. Each year, dozens of reports of Bigfoot creatures and unidentified flying objects are made to PASU. Although the cases are no longer making headlines, plenty of people report chilling incidents that can't be explained. Many of them have taken place in the Laurel Highlands, particularly along the Chestnut Ridge, which has become known as Pennsylvania's Twilight Zone
"That ridge seems to have a pattern (of sightings) for what reason, I don't know," Micklow said, "Maybe it's because it's pretty wild up there and not heavily populated. If there's any other reason, I don't know what it is."
Alleged UFO and Bigfoot sightings have been known since the worldwide flap of 1973. Then, it made big news. Now there are few media reports, but that doesn't mean the sightings have stopped. Gordon emphasizes that the witnesses are average people and most of them hesitate to tell anyone what they've seen for fear of ridicule. It's the guaranteed anonymity that allows them to finally get in touch with PASU, often through referrals from the police.
The details from local sightings and from all around the world are always strikingly similar. In the case of the creatures, they're usually tall, hairy, ape-like, have glowing red eyes, are often foul-smelling, and sometimes emit screams that have been described as sounding like a woman in pain. In the case of UFOs, they come in all sizes, from small enough to fly through windows to bigger than a house. They can hover or flit around quickly. The creatures and UFOs have also been known to suddenly disappear.
The spring of 1990 was a particularly busy time for Bigfoot reports in the Laurel Highlands. On the ridge above Youngstown (near Latrobe) a witness said that for the last several springs he and some neighbors had been hearing high-pitched screams at night.
"He's hunted all his life and he lives on a farm, right next to the woods," Micklow said. "He knows just about everything that comes and goes through the area."
What he heard was nothing he'd heard before, and what he finally saw was unlike anything he'd ever seen. On this night the screams were so close to the house that he couldn't resist investigating. It was about 3 a.m. when he and his son went out and scanned the yard with a flashlight. There at the edge of the field was a small, hairy ape-like creature standing upright and staring back at him with intense red eyes. Unlike most reported Bigfoot creatures, this one wasn't very big. The witness estimated it to be only about three and a half to four feet tall.
I froze," he told Micklow. "It just let out a scream and I shut the light out and didn't know what to expect. I just shut the light off. The hair on the back of my head stood up. That's how scared I was."
The man heard it one more time on another night, and woke up his wife. Until then, she never believed there was anything out there. Now she's changed her mind.
In another sighting that spring, a man going night fishing at Donegal Lake pulled into the parking lot, walked to the edge of the water with his little dog and 15 minutes later the dog began barking and twirling around. When the man got up and shined his light behind him, he saw a huge hairy creature just 50 to 100 feet away. It let out three shrieks then turned and walked into the woods. The man gave the usual description: hairy and ape-like but he estimated that it stood seven feet tall and weighed about 400 pounds.
" He was frightened," Micklow said. "He ran to his car and went directly home, about a mile away, and called the state police, who directed him to us."
In 1988 there were high-pitched screams in a series of incidents near Laughlintown, but the man who heard them said they happened about 4:30 to 5 p.m. not at night.
"He couldn't figure out what it was, but one afternoon he was walking around and heard where it was coming from," Micklow said. "He knew this wooded area like the back of his hand, and he stood there for about ten minutes looking over the hill."
At first he couldn't see anything, then about 100 yards ahead it looked like a stump where he knew he hadn't cut down any trees. Then the "stump" started moving away. PASU has tape recordings of alleged Bigfoot screams. When Micklow played one, the man said that's what he'd been hearing for a week.
A year or two earlier, a woman who lives on the ridge west of Derry heard similar screaming, but thought her horses were carrying on. Several nights later she heard the sound again, looked out the window and saw a Bigfoot type creature walk through her yard, cross the electric fence and go into a wooded area.
Micklow has never seen anything himself that couldn't be explained, but he believes there are some things that just aren't natural. Yes, there are hoaxes, like when someone fabricated footprints at the Sleepy Hollow causeway after media coverage of that reported sighting. But PASU experts can tell when tracks are faked. Real footprints leave impressions of muscle and tendon surfaces, and weight distribution.
"We don't go in with the idea that we're dealing with a hoax," Micklow said. "We go into the investigation with an open mind to determine all the facts, and we try to determine if the incident is really something natural."
Many times people see big dogs or bears, or objects in the sky that are explainable natural phenomena or man-made. But there's still that intriguing percentage of unexplainable incidents, such as in January of 1990 when an Oak Grove resident (near Ligonier) taking the family dog out at night found eight three-toed footprints in the snow, five and a half feet apart.)
There were nearly 70 five-toed prints left in the snow during a blizzard-like storm on February 13, 1985. At around 6 a.m. several persons traveling a road on the Derry side of the Chestnut Ridge noticed what they initially thought were bear prints. However, these impressions were 15 inches long, nine inches wide and showed a stride from 48 to 65 inches. PASU investigators followed the tracks for a distance, but the severe weather halted their efforts.
Were the impressions left by a known mammal, or once again had something unexplained happened on the Chestnut Ridge? And what was it that on April 16, 1989, on the southern end of the ridge in Fayette County, disturbed the farmer's livestock and caused his dog to act strange? The witness swore it was a huge, 8-foot tall hair manlike creature that ran, then easily cleared a high fence at the edge of a field
Indeed, what are these people seeing, and what's leaving behind the footprints? "We just represent the facts," Micklow said. "You can draw your own conclusions.

On Sunday night the witness (involved in previous encounters) woke up to see two tall praying mantis type beings standing in the middle of his bedroom. They looked as if they were engaged in a conversation, making high-pitched (almost digital) clicking sounds at each other. The witness was too tired to be afraid so he just concentrated on making a mental description, cross checking it with the ones he'd seen before. Both were extremely thin and tall, well over seven feet high. One was slightly taller than the other. Their necks were long, flexible and tube-like and didn't look strong enough to support their triangular heads. The neck and the head moved in a way that reminded the witness of the old-stop motion monster films or like a lizard. Both were wearing long black robes that again looked like liquid oil. On the side of the face he could clearly see a small round hole just below their eyes. He felt completely drained and couldn't move. He then slipped back into unconsciousness.

Late at night Gonzalo Rodriguez heard strange noises and a ruckus coming from the hen house on his property---a commotion that was far from being normal. He decided to send his son to check with a flashlight to make sure thieves weren't at work. The youth obeyed his father and flashlight in hand approached the large hen house stealthily, becoming terrified upon seeing a strange black animal, standing some 40cm, tall and resembling a small dog with a long tail and standing on two legs. He recalls, among what little he was able to see through the flashlight's beam, that the animal had a very long tongue. Upon seeing the light, the creature fled into the vegetation, skillfully leaping over a wall. An inspection of the hen house revealed that 20 hens had been slain. Police authorities of the nearby town of San Ramon were notified and officer Marcos Hernandez reported to the scene to corroborate not only Gonzalo Rodriguez's account, but also the testimony of frightened neighbors. The birds were whole and the only sign of damage to them were the two small orifices on their backs, through which it is presumed that the strange assailant drove its fangs to remove or suck the blood. Several days before several dead sheep had been found with the same characteristics; twin puncture marks on their necks or back and not a single drop of blood.

Jason McIntosh and two friends were stopped at the end of a road to watch a light in the sky when one of the girls pointed out some orange lights moving in a field. To their left in a fenced yard they saw an image of two people in white "dancing". About 20 minutes later the car was filled with green glowing lights moving around at high speed. They could feel massive charges of static electricity and one of the girls got out and wanted to see the aliens. She came back to the car saying that she had seen strange little men. At the same time the others felt sensations of a craft flying slowly overhead and felt downdrafts of air. Then they saw a bright white light above the house in the field and occasionally smaller lights shooting into it from the sky. They could also see a group of figures in white standing in front of a house. One of the girls and Jason walked up the path to investigate and they stood 15 ft from them and Jason waved at one and it waved back. Suddenly they had an overwhelming sense of danger and went back to the car. Soon they could see gray colored creatures, 4 ft tall leaning in the passenger window. They then drove to the end of a driveway then drove back to the front. They could see that from where the strangers in white were standing what appeared to be large black charges of electricity were being pushed up towards the white light in the sky. Then a big black fog came in and left. The creatures were gone but the little green lights stayed in the car for 2 or 3 hours afterwards.

Several local inhabitants reported hearing a very loud booming noise over the area and what appeared to be a metallic object falling into the beach area. For a while they did not approach the supposed crash site because of fear. However others reported that the object was huge and disc-shaped, apparently metallic, without windows or wings. Soon after the "crash" members of the Mexican Territorial Army cordoned off the area and warned local inhabitants not to approach the area. Others have reported seeing similar disc-shaped craft flying at a high altitude over the area.

Constable Jagdish Parishad who on Thursday was keeping vigil on the international border had seen a flying object like a hot air balloon carrying three persons who disembarked after landing in Pakistani territory.
Since the constable had never seen a para-glider, fan glider or even a hot air balloon during his service tenure, it is difficult to ascertain the authenticity of the matter.

by helicopter gunships and artillery detained 20 people in raids against suspected Al-Qaeda hideouts in a tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

On a very cold night, the witness, Marina was in her room reading a book when she heard loud scratching noises on her window. Startled she looked at the window and saw a bizarre entity with a very large head and strange red eyes. The entity stared at Marina and mumbled some words, which Marina thought it meant for her to come and open the window because he wanted to talk to her. In a trance-like state she opened the window and the entity then spoke the following words, "Humans less and less value their planet, and each day that goes by they destroy the planet a little more, humans do not realize that they are destroying themselves also." Moments later the entity vanished.

A silhouette of a man who walks on rooftops, drags heavy chains and makes strange noises turned into a disquieting "phantom" that has made residents of Monte Maiz restless. Opinions on the "phantom" are diametrically opposed, since some claim having seen "a figure standing over 2 meters tall, dressed in black and with spectacular agility" while others say its all imagination. The local residents call it "the phantom". Those who have seen it say that it is a young person, very tall and slim, with red eye. It dresses in white, sometimes black and others gray. Always wears a hat and covers its face with a mask or hood.
The sounds on the rooftops begin after 2100 hours, as do the calls to the police. Residents claim that it walks on the roof, shuffles and runs, drags chains, scratches at windows and bangs at doors. It doesn't speak or yell---it has only been heard to laugh in the dark or whistle, some claim having heard it imitate the howling of a dog. Locals say that it runs swiftly and jumps over barbed wire fencing and walls without touching them, according to concerned neighbors. Some eyewitness accounts follow:
Ivana Molina had gone out to her yard and saw a man dancing, whistling and slapping his hands. The neighbors heard similar noises. The next day, she went out and the same man tried to grab her. She ran into the house and phoned the police. It then banged on her bathroom window and wrote "mueres" (you'll die) with its finger.
Oscar Gonzalez reported standing in the yard when he saw a shadow walking along. He could see its red eyes. He then went out with another fellow to find it and the "phantom" jumped the neighbor's yard. It was dressed in white. The following day it whistled at the men again. They went out to chase it and it vanished.
Veronica Bertrando reported that her husband saw it as it crossed the patio; he said it was dressed in gray with a hood over its head. When it went by the dog barked, her husband then went outside and it took off running. He searched for it but could not find it.
Local police offered the following additional details on the stranger (or strangers?), 1.8 to 1.9 meters tall, dresses in black, a white face (possibly a mask) wears a black hat, its movements are generally silent and possesses extreme agility, it jumps over fences, walls and climbs up trees with ease. It normally appears between 2130 to 0300 hours

A sort of "inner voice" told the witness to get his camera and go outside. He waited for about 5 minutes then a bright white light shone on his eyes and then he saw three disc-shaped craft surrounding a large cigar-shaped object maneuvering overhead. The discs kept circling around the cigar. He took three photographs then he was again illuminated by a bright white light and suddenly found himself on his bed the next morning. He suffered from nosebleeds after the incident and had strange lucid "dreams" of seeing a little "black man" who enters his bedroom and tells him that they are taking him. Steven Nicklin and a friend were walking across Northicote Farm near an old Tudor farmhouse when both men saw a humanoid grayish figure with a human-type head standing on a tree, which formed part of the many trees that bordered the farm, these were tall pine trees, and the figure stood on the top branches. They estimated the size of the figure as being about 2.1 meters in height. It had two legs and two arms connected to membrane-type wings. Its clawed hands seemed connected to the wings, somehow resembling a pterosaur. It moved its head and looked directly at the witnesses, since the moon was full and there was a streetlight not far away. It turned its head from the witnesses and then took one giant leap and glided to the next tree. The tree bent under the creature's weight as it took the impact. It then turned its head to look at them once more. Its gaze felt that "it could look into their very being (soul)". Both men felt quite scared and both fled the area quickly. The men said that it was a creature they had never seen before nor wanted to see again.

The witness was on his paper route and was driving at about 25-30 mph when he saw a real bright light in the sky about the size of the moon. He pulled up to the side to catch a better glimpse of the object. About 1 minute passed when all of the sudden it disappeared. Then after 10 seconds of dead silence a round bright object landed right in front of the witness. It was circular and glowed very brightly. It was probably about 25 ft in height and about 100 ft in diameter. Stunned the witness heard a voice as if someone was talking to him gently in his ear. He looked around and did not see anybody. All of the sudden the craft didn't glow anymore and on the side of the craft it said, "future". The voice then said, "nobody else can see this but you, we are from the future, you are a representative now of the future for this mass (sic), please lead or there will be dire consequences." The voice talked very slowly and clearly in perfect English. He still couldn't see anybody but after the voice stopped talking he shouted, "who the hell are you"! And then everything disappeared. After about 10 minutes of reflecting on what had occurred, the witness drove home.

44-year old Miss Wiktoria Lesniakiewicz was in her bedroom when she suddenly noticed her cat, which had died several days ago. She followed the animal. The cat walked out of the bedroom through the closed door, but feeling very tired Wiktoria went to sleep. That same night she had a strange "dream" about her cat. She woke up feeling the cat's hot body on her legs. At the same time she sensed and heard strange voices and music. Three separate voices were discussing something, speaking in a strange language. The music resembled classical music, very similar to the Mozart symphonies, but it was definitely not a Mozart composition. Afraid, Wiktoria turned the lamp on. The voices and the music then slowly faded away. She was unable to sleep the rest of the night.

The witness, M N, was driving eastward on Wellington Street on the southeastern end of Lake Superior and as he came to the central part of the city (known to locals of the Lake Superior region as Soo, Canada). He noticed a straight beam of light hovering in the early morning sky, from the top of the hill that was on his northern side. His vehicle came to a complete stop at a cross street and he looked all the way down to the end of the street (about 7 blocks away) because the street ended at the base of the hill and has a metal stairwell leading to McDonald Avenue. Although being 7 blocks away his eyes were able to focus on a little dark figure that was standing very still. This caught his curiosity as he slowly drove towards it, and then started moving from side to side using fluid movements as if it was hovering in mid-air. It moved as if it was confused, or afraid and didn't know what to do. As he got closer, the figure's appearance seemed to have metamorphosed into a transparent, shadow like entity that very swiftly flew up the stairs. To his astonishment, the beam of light that he had seen in the sky a few minutes before and a couple of miles away was now at the top of the hill, only about 100 ft away. With his heart racing, he drove as fast as he could eastward along the base of the hill until he came to the nearest hill street and drove up McDonald Avenue to see what was happening. In a matter of seconds, traveling from the bottom to the top of the hill, he arrived at the top of the steps only to find three circle-shaped burn markings on the pavement of the street. Approximately 10 seconds later he heard a very weird kind of gunshot sound, looked up to the sky and saw a bright light shooting up into the stars. As he watched the spectacle a surreal kind of peaceful feeling came upon him and he felt as if every hair on his body as standing on end. The feeling only lasted for what felt like 30 seconds, but when he looked at his watch it was a good 40 minutes later.

The witness was returning to her house after finishing a late night farm chore when something caught her eye as she almost reached her door. To her left she saw a "thing" running very fast about 30 yards away from her, not comprehending what she was seeing, she could only describe the entity as looking like a "stick man." It seemed to turn its head over his left shoulder and look straight at her, and then it took off in a sprint towards her front door. Very upset the witness ran inside and locked all the doors. The witness was in bed when he was awoken by a sound at his window. He tried to move but couldn't. A shadowy figure shaped somewhat like a human but all black like a shadow loomed over him and grabbed him. He felt that he could not breath and then passed out.
Later he awoke to the words "he has (unintelligible) send him back". It felt like he had an IV in his arm. His next memory was of being back in his bedroom at 0500A. He has no other memories of the event.

26-year old Liliana Nievas was sitting in her patio with her boyfriend when suddenly several "cascotazos" (a sort of rock or brick abundant in the area) fell on the two apparently coming from an area behind the patio. Liliana went alone to investigate when she came upon a short dark "man", which began to pummel her and attempted to drag her away. She could only describe the entity as short, dark and shadowy, which covered her mouth and began to drag her on the ground. Hearing her screams, several neighbors, family members, and her boyfriend ran to find the woman lying on the ground suffering facial injuries. She kept screaming that "he is trying to drag me away" as the astounded group watched as a mysterious force indeed seemed to pull her away, however they did not see anybody. Finally with the help of her boyfriend and others they managed to hold Liliana down and the force seemed to release her. She was taken to a local hospital suffering from grievous injuries.
Others in the area reported being pelted by bricks and another witness reported seeing a shadowy entity stealing fruit from his backyard.

Emily Parkinson was lying in bed when a bright white light suddenly was reflected in her mirror. Instantly she sat up terrified and went to the window to see whether it was her husband coming home. She then saw a figure of approximately 6 ft in height standing on her lawn. It seemed to have a huge eye on its stomach (?) resembling huge black circles that seemed to pierce the witness head with an incredibly high-pitched sound. She was fixed to the spot with terror, as the strange creature seemed to slowly dissolve from view.

77-year old Mrs. K J woke up late at night and went to the lavatory and back to her bedroom, as she passed through the kitchen she was surprised to see a strong flame-orange light, which floated in the sky. She quickly realized that it couldn't be the moon. The light had the shape of a hemisphere, the upper part was rounded and its bottom was flat. The light was 2-3 times bigger than the full moon.
The witness states that the light hung above the forest over Hajdowka hill, which was 1.5 km from her house. She watched for about 5 minutes and felt dizzy and then she went to bed.
During the night she had a disturbing "dream" about a strange meeting with a huge shiny "thing". She awoke feeling very frightened around 0630A.

The witness was returning to her house after finishing a late night farm chore when something caught her eye as she almost reached her door. To her left she saw a "thing" running very fast about 30 yards away from her, not comprehending what she was seeing, she could only describe the entity as looking like a "stick man." It seemed to turn its head over his left shoulder and look straight at her, and then it took off in a sprint towards her front door. Very upset the witness ran inside and locked all the doors. The LAST thing I want to Do is DIE OF BOREDOM!! The game is interesting, primarily because we DON'T know how it ends! I have spent the majority of my life chasing what most deem willowhisps and myths. Strange as it may seem MOST of them eventually work out and provide answers!
I don't know if I posted it here or not of if it just did not post. This thing gets weird sometimes. But in 1982 I was researching the four corners history and ran across a book titled, "Our Navajo Neighbors' by a Franc Newcomb. In it she talked in one paragraph of finding the skeletons of two beings over 12 ft tall on a Mesa behind two Grey hills. Since I was investigating Big Foot at the time the story stuck in my head. I asked a lot of questions concerning the early Archaeologists and Anthropologists who worked this area in the late 30's and early 40's. Did a lot of research on Earl Morris who did much of the cataloging of various ruins and such at the time. Called several Eastern Museums trying to LOCATE the Skeletons. After all IF someone FOUND Skeletons of Beings 12 ft tall one would THINK they would have kept them and logged them and SOMEONE HAD THEM!
It took me about three years and one afternoon I wandered into the Anthropology Department of UNM. Met a lady at the desk and told her what I was looking for and showed her the excerpt from the book. Imagine MY surprise when she laughed and said, " Oh that was my Sister Francis. Her and Dad were Pot Hunters and Artifact Collectors. IF she said it, she saw it!" When I asked what happened to the skeletons her answer was simple. " Oh they were Pot Hunters. They never messed with Skeletons. If they found them they reburied them! Their still up there more then likely!" Illogical? Perhaps but also they were folks living ON the Navajo Reservation WITH the Navajo and had Navajo helpers.
I asked her about their 'water boy' and she gave me a name. So I eventually went looking for him. Turned out he was still alive living in the Sheep-springs Chapter. Drove down, finally found him and talked to him. His response was interesting. He told me lots of stories about the pots and artifacts they found, but when I asked of the Skeletons his response was typical Navajo. " Bones! NO BONES!! Lots of Pots, NO BONES!" Considering the Navajo Aversion to Death, I interpreted that as there WERE BONES and he wasn't about to talk about them either!
During this time also I kept picking up stories about a man named Rattle Snake Sam who supposedly had found Skeletons of beings over 12 feet tall. So in my wanderings I asked about "Sam". I found several who had heard the story but none who had a clue as to WHO Sam was or where to find him.
In 1984 I ended up in W. Germany running the Base Legitimate Stage Theater and Teaching Acting and producing musical theater productions, then to NYC and Hazelton, Pa where I worked on a newspaper and later a top line Reproduction outfit at Old Forge. In 1990 I ended up back in N.M. at Magdalena.
One weekend Sylvia wanted to go to Carlsbad Caverns so we took off. Driving down the highway seven miles south of Socorro along the Stallion Missile Range we saw a little two house town named "Bingham", on the south side was a house and a Rock Shop. Syl was a rock hound so I pulled in. While she was browsing the rocks I wandered around the yard and found a large hole about 12 feet deep and full of Rattle Snakes in the bottom. So I wandered over to the lady who ran the place and asked, " You ever heard of anyone named Rattle Snake Sam?" Imagine my surprise when she said, " Yeah, he's right over there." pointing to the house. So I knocked on the door and introduced myself and was invited in. The mans name was Ballard and it was he and his brother who had discovered the skeletons while Artifact and Snake Hunting. He said there were a series if, 'caves' shaped like jugs or bottles, several of them and that he and his brother had crawled into one of them and found a skeleton, laying in a fetal position held by raw hide straps, with lots of artifacts stacked around them. He said he and his brother had dragged one out to the top and laid it out and it measured over 12 feet tall. When I asked him what they had done with the Skeleton his answer was simple. "We tossed it all back in the hole." I asked him WHY they hadn't brought out at least the SKULL his answer was typical 'cowboy'. "Well we thought about it but my brother couldn't fit it in a five gallon bucket so he hung it in a tree."
My POINT is there are LOTS of Stories, Myths and Legends around. NOT ALL of them are Hoax's! Some Anthropologists in several Institutions were fools who THOUGHT they KNEW and walked away laughing from a story that would have MADE their Names and Carriers! The Slip-stick boys are rich in academic knowledge perhaps, but in the end they are merely GUESSING! In 1990 a crew dug a hole 65 ft deep on the strength of a MYTH and took $32 Million in Spanish Gold and Silver Bullion out of the bottom of it just south of Grants! But THAT IS another story!!
