EYE WITNESS REPORT OF A CROP CIRCLE FORMING IN POLAND
Mr. Jerzy Szpulecki, Wylatowo, Poland
June 30, 2000, approx. 12:15 am
Approximately 7 minutes
Wylatowo, Poland
Interviewed by Nancy Talbott
DESCRIPTION OF EVENT:
In the early morning of July 22, 2000 Mr. Jerzy Szpulecki, a farmer in this rural area of central Poland, was working late at night on a new house he was building on the edge of a wheat field farmed by his neighbor, Tadeusz Filipczak. At 12:15 am the lights in his house suddenly went out and he came downstairs to check for a short circuit or other possible cause. As he reached the first floor he could see, through the large windows in the front of the house, that the street-lights on the nearby road were also out, and that there were no lights in houses nearby.
Almost immediately he then saw a "strange" red light in the sky coming down very slowly, toward the field in front of his house. The light was a very bright red, spherical in shape, about 0 m (65 +/- ft.) in diameter and, when first seen, was about 500 m above the trees on the left side of the field. As the light came closer he saw what looked like a turbulent and rotating misty "white fog" above the red light which - as the object descended about 80m out in the field and directly in from of his windows - then appeared to be "some type of craft." As it got closer it banked at an angle and continued to descend to the field, but very very slowly.
At this point the glowing, bright red sphere seemed to be an outer shell of some sort, surrounding an inner white mass of fog, which was constantly swirling or rotating within the red sphere. As this strange object got closer to the ground it began to enlarge into a much bigger, but still round, object and seemed to "discharge something into the air around it." Mr. Szpulecki says the he thinks the "craft" was the color of the white mist" (meaning that there was a white foggy material swirling around an actual solid craft, all of which was not inside the red sphere). He also had the impression that the surrounding red shell was "driving" the object inside.
As the object descended to about 20m above the ground he began to notice a "pressure" on his body, and as it got close to the ground sparks erupted, "like a short-circuit... I saw it touch the ground... when it touched down there were brilliant flashes like lightning" And, as it landed, multiple "arms" suddenly extended out of the center of the object, slowly bending down to the ground. At this point the red glow became so bright "it was hard to watch because it hurt my eyes." There seemed to be four of these "arms" (tentacle-like protrusions, which angled down toward the ground) and which were all the same length and bluish in color and on the ends of each of the "arms" there was an even brighter, round, violet-colored light-ball. These violet light-balls were the brightest part of the whole object and wee very difficult to watch" because the brightness hurt his eyes.
Mr. Szpulecki was not completely certain about the number of these protruding arms, saying first that there were four of them, but later saying there may have been five of six. His primary impression, through, was that there were only four.
At this point the witness noticed that there were at least three cars stopped on the road next to the field, their occupants apparently also watching the object. The next day he heard from other villagers that "many" people had seen the glowing red ball of light as it crossed the sky heading toward the field.
Mr. Szpulecki reports that the object sat touching the ground for "at least a minute," with sparks flying and giving off an intense light, and that it was during this time that he became aware of a physical "pressure" on his body. This sensation of something pressing on his body, and particularly on his head, was noticed most as the "arms" were extended from the object as it settled down to the ground. Even though only the top half of his body was exposed to the windows, he is sure that he felt this strong pressure all over. He reported no typical electromagnetic effects (such as the hair on his arms, or back of his neck rising) and did not have a headache, and states that he smelled nothing unusual and heard no sound at all during the entire episode. On an instinctual level he was certain that this "energy" (as evidenced by both the brilliant light being given off by the object, and the pressure on his body) was not harmful to people.
After what the witness states was about a minute the protruding arms retracted and the object, whose white swirling center continued to rotate constantly inside the red outer shell, rose into the air a few meters and then descended into the field again, a "short distance" away. Again the "arms" (with the brilliant violet spheres of light on the ends) protruded out of the object, bending down to the ground and again he felt a very strong pressure on his body, particularly on his head. "Many sparks" also accompanied this second landing of the object, but this time Mr. Szpulecki states that they were "returning to the mist" instead of coming from it.. that the sparks were coming up to the object from the ground.
Finally, after sitting on the ground this second time for about a minute, the arms again retracted and the "red shell closed in again around the white center" so that all he could see at this point was the red ball of light - and the whole object started to rise, becoming smaller in overall size as it rose. Its red glow, "like a brilliant sunset," became so intense that it lit up the room in which the witness was standing. Slowly, it simply drifted away across the fields and disappeared in the distance. Mr. Szpulecki estimates the amount of time that had elapsed from when he first saw the object to when it disappeared at about 7 minutes.
Although when he had first spotted the object he thought it was something "on fire," during the sighting it became clear that the field did not catch fire and he got the impression instead that this was something "other-worldly" maybe "extraterrestrial." He stated he was profoundly moved emotionally and completely awed and amazed by what he had seen, stating that "it was beautiful" and that he had not felt threatened or been afraid. This intense emotional response lasted for about half-an-hour after the object departed, "like after drinking a glass of beer." Again he reiterated that he felt this energy was not harmful to people. While interviewing Mr. Szpulecki (and on the videotape) it was apparent that he was still markedly moved by his recollection of this experience.
Since the electricity in the house was still out Mr. Szpulecki went back upstairs to retrieve his wristwatch before returning to his home and discovered that it had stopped at 12:01 a.m, the time when he believed the power had been interrupted. Because it was obvious that the wheat field was not on fire and because he had never heard of a crop circle, he returned to his home in the village.
The next morning a neighbor, whose house also faces the field in which the object had landed, informed Mr. Szpulecki that there was a strange marking in the wheat field - a pictogram-style crop circle which was, it turned out, flattened into the wheat in the precise location where the amazing object had landed the night before. Furthermore, the design of this pictogram (described by the neighbor as "something like a cross") was strikingly similar to the witness's description of the strange object itself with its "arms" extended, ending in the smaller violet light spheres on the end of each. In another field on the north side of the road (only a few meters away) an additional 20m diameter ringed circle was also found. Both men struggled to grasp the significance of the symbols, but were unable to "understand the meaning of the signs."
Many people described the formation in Wylatowo in 2000 as being "cross-like" in character, and the crop circle design at Golabki in 2002 resembled a Celtic Cross -- and both closely approximated the fiery red object which Mr. Szpulecki describes landing in the field in front of his house. Whether these events are in any way associated with the very similar mark found in 2001, embedded in a carp's body many miles away, is unknown, but in an overwhelmingly Catholic country with an enduring interest in spiritual matters it is surely understandable that a good deal of curiosity has been aroused.

PHILIPPINES CEMETERY PROVIDES MANILA'S POOR A PLACE TO LIVE AMONG THE DEAD
Philippines cemetery provides Manila's poor a place to live among the dead
Thousands of families have made city graveyard their home as authorities grapple with rising population and housing shortage
-
Kate Hodal in Manila
- guardian.co.uk,
Every morning, Alberto Lagarda Evangelista, 71, leaves the
two-storey, lemon-yellow home he has lived in for the past decade and
walks to work at the cemetery next door. As a caretaker of about 20
graves, Evangelista earns just 20,000 pesos (£315) a year, a sum so
small that he must share his house with seven other people – all of whom
are dead.
Evangelista lives and works in the Cementerio del Norte, a sprawling, 54-hectare green space in north Manila that is also home to some 1,000 other families. Here in the Philippines' largest public graveyard, century-old tombs have been converted into stalls selling sachets of shampoo and instant noodles, clothes lines are strung between crosses and car batteries power radios, karaoke machines and television sets. Evangelista's home is a mausoleum housing eight graves. The breezy second storey where the owners pay their annual respects to the dead doubles as his bedroom. "Just look at my view," he says, pointing his cigarette out towards the grave-studded horizon.
Today, the shady lanes are busy with the sundry activities of any normal neighbourhood: a group of boys plays basketball; adults while away the afternoon heat with sodas and playing cards; couples canoodle atop the graves that double as their beds; and women prepare chicken adobo in their mausoleum cafes.
The cemetery's inhabitants rank among the poorest of the poor in Manila, a capital where roughly 43% of the city's 13 million residents live in informal settlements like this one, according to a 2011 Asian Development Bank report. This Roman Catholic country has one of Asia's fastest growing populations and a massive housing shortage – meaning that the urban poor must usually find, build or cobble together housing anywhere there is space: under bridges, along highways, in alleys, perched atop flood channels, or even among the dead.
No one knows exactly when the cemetery became a living village. But many of Manila North's 6,000-odd residents were born here and expect to spend their whole lives here. Gravedigger Steve Esbacos, 52, a muscular man with blue-rimmed eyes, was born and raised in the same mausoleum where he now raises his own four children. "Sometimes I don't like living here, because it's dirty and it smells bad," he says, before admitting that he's never wanted to live anywhere else. "My father is buried just over there and I don't know where else I'd go."
Ramil and Josephine Raviz run a stall selling instant noodles and peanuts to residents and mourners. They earn enough money to send their 10-year-old daughter to school, and say they prefer life here to the possibilities "outside" the cemetery's four walls.
"When I first came to Norte 30 years ago, there weren't so many families here – it was quiet and peaceful and safe, very different to the outside slums in Manila," says Ramil, 46, in his mausoleum housing a fan, fridge, rocking chair, microwave, blankets and mattresses, and six graves. "But once people realised they could work here and live here for free, they moved in."
The cemetery hasn't retained that peaceful aura. Robberies and muggings are common, residents admit, with gangs said to be working different corners of the sprawling greenery. Youth unemployment is high and alcohol cheap. City authorities have repeatedly threatened to evict those living here. But grave-dwellers have found a way to stay on despite the pressure, using ad-hoc "deeds" from the families whose graves they maintain, allowing them to live and work on-site.
The issue is not so much people living in the cemetery – where quarters can be more spacious and cleaner than in a shanty on one of the city's easily flooded riverways – but the fact that Manila is not properly addressing the needs of the urban poor, says Father Norberto Carcellar, director of Philippine Action for Community-Led Shelter Initiatives. "Poor people can pay as much as four times [the normal rates] for electricity and water in their shanties because mafia syndicates take over and they have no choice but to pay [the higher rates]," he says.
"These people are 'invisible' – they can be evicted at any time, they face floods, they live on the periphery and the government generally likes to send them very far away to other provinces [to deal with the problem]."
Under a $1.2bn (£800m) government mandate to clean up Manila, that may soon change. Recent official figures show 104,000 families live in danger areas such as graveyards and riverbeds, and the city aims to move 550,000 of the most vulnerable residents to safer destinations. Some will be residents of Manila North, yet no one in the cemetery seems ready – or willing – to go.
"I often think, what would have happened if I had finished school," Evangelista says quietly as he navigates the steep ladder from his open-air verandah back downstairs into the main mausoleum. "I only made it to third grade. Maybe I would have had a better job to live somewhere else." As he knocks on the solid mausoleum walls, he says: "This is the best house I've lived in; the strongest, safest, with the best view."

MYSTERIOUS ORBS IN ANCIENT TEMPLE
Archaeologists Uncover Hundreds of Mysterious Orbs in Ancient Temple
In
news that will likely delight Apollo 11 deniers, Roswell frequenters,
and Illuminati enthusiasts alike, archaeologists have discovered
hundreds of mysterious, once-metallic spheres buried deep beneath an
ancient pyramid in Mexico City. And we have absolutely no idea what
they're for.
Described
by Jorge Zavala, an archaeologist at Mexico's National Anthropology and
History Institute, as an "unprecedented discovery," the orbs have
called one of the most important temples in an ancient, pre-Hispanic
city home for the past 1,800 years.
But this
wasn't just your average ancient township; the city, Teotihuacan, was
once one of the biggest in the world, boasting over 100,000 residents at
a time when the Earth itself only held around 200 million. And it's
this relatively massive population that makes the city's total
abandonment for "mysterious reasons" in 700 AD all the more puzzling.
Plus, it
seems that the Teotihuacans knew damn well they weren't coming back.
Before fleeing the famine and/or alien invasion that consumed their
home, people had filled their beloved temple's tunnels with so much
debris and ruins that it took scientists several years of planning alone before they could dig their way in.
Unearthing the Tomb
The fruit of all that prepatory labor? A team of wireless robots working together to offer a glimpse into an increasingly esoteric past.
The robotic
system, dubbed Tlaloque, includes a larger rover to take over carpool
duty for two smaller mechanisms it chauffeurs around the ruins'
dilapidated tunnels. Once the trio arrives at an actual chamber, one
vehicle will break off and take infrared shots of the entire space while
its smaller, flight-enabled drone friend zooms around to capture video
footage.
In this
case, it's the infrared scanner that stumbled upon the orb-loaded
chambers, which held hundreds of the clay-cored, yellow-tinted balls
currently stumping scientists.
Fool's Gold
The yellow
color comes from jarosite, which forms as pyrite—or fool's
gold—oxidizes. So back in 300 AD, when the Teotihuacanos used these
variously sized (1.5 to 5 inches) balls in whatever ceremonies or
rituals they engaged in, they were looking at what might have seemed
like beautiful, glimmering balls of gold.
As George Gowgill, professor emeritus at Arizona State University told Discovery News:
Pyrite was certainly used by the Teotihuacanos and other ancient Mesoamerican societies. Originally the spheres would have shown brilliantly. They are indeed unique, but I have no idea what they mean.
As the
walls themselves were also dusted with pyrite—which would have given a
lovely golden sheen to the pottery and crystal-covered masks scattered
around the room—the archaeologists believe that "high-ranking people, priests, or even rulers went down to the tunnel to perform rituals."
Ancient Intentions
What these
golden-ball-necessitating rituals might have entailed, though, remains
just as inconclusive. As Zavala succinctly and ominously states: "No one
can establish their function."
It seems entirely possible, though, that they served some sort of religious purpose; Teotihuaca—translation: the place where men become gods—began
as a religious center for the region, and the site has been thought to
include a burial ground. The Teotihuacan people worshiped eight gods,
and were known to practice human sacrifices during the dedication of
buildings like, say, giant temples. All of which would have looked quite
compelling against a gleaming gold backdrop.
Full
answers may still come, and soon; there are still three chambers left
for the researchers (and their robot friends) to go digging through.
That last one might yield an even bigger surprise, its thick walls were
demolished about 1,800 years ago so that the Teotihuacan people could
deposit "something very important" in the safest part they could. Forget
golden orbs; we might just be in for crystal skulls. [Mexico National Institute of Anthropology and History via Discovery News]

SPACE BABY
THE SPACE BABY (from the Fortean Times)
Cynthia Appleton (formerly Spencer) was 27 years old in 1957. After leaving the Woman’s Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS) some years earlier, she married Ronald Appleton and they eventually settled at 87 Fentham Road. Until 1957 the Appletons lived unremarkable lives. Ronald worked hard as a metalworker and provided for Cynthia, who bore him two children, Susan in 1955 and Janice in 1957. To all intents and purposes they were the perfect nuclear family in an imperfect post-nuclear world (see below).
19 November 1957 was just an ordinary winter’s day, with Cynthia Appleton going about her routine domestic routines. Then, shortly after lunchtime, her world-view was utterly transformed.
Less than two months later, in the Birmingham Evening Dispatch, Cynthia Appleton gave the first public account of what had taken place: “It was early afternoon. My children were having a rest and I went into the lounge where the baby was asleep in her pram. There, just a few feet away, stood this slender white-skinned man. He had blond hair. He was the same as any human being, except that he wore a kind of dome over his head and a tight-fitting all-in-one suit of a grey metallic colour. I was rooted to the spot – and terrified – until he spoke. He said we were going about space flight the wrong way and that men of his world – which he did not name – would come to Earth before we reached theirs.”
This initial public statement was, however, just the barest outline of Appleton’s experiences, which developed over a three-year period. UFO researcher and clinical psychologist Dr John Dale interviewed Appleton many times over this period. Dale is missing in action, his notes lost, but ufologist Jenny Randles copied some of them, giving us a fuller picture of Cynthia Appleton’s claims. It seems that events had actually begun on 16 November, when Cynthia had suffered a blackout while doing the housework. This, her visitors later informed her, was a “failed attempt at contact”. According to her interviews with Dr Dale, the 19 November contact began when Appleton “became aware of an atmosphere. It seemed like a rosy coloured darkness materialized outside. The light did not seem to penetrate into the living room.” The entity then appeared in the room from nowhere, and the light returned to normal. Appleton described how the entity “spoke to me into my mind, saying, ‘Do not be afraid’.”
Through telepathic communication the entity told Appleton he was “from another world, but do not want to take you over because the world is so good with you… we wish to live in unison but cannot until you stop all wars.” The visitor went on to state that he knew space-flight experiments – “to get to us” – were taking place, but that the methods being used were fundamentally wrong: “Your scientists are pulling against the greatest force of gravity by going straight up – you should travel with a sideways attitude.” And with that Zen-like suggestion, the being slowly opened his arms and a ‘TV set’ appeared in the space between them. This appeared to be a holographic image – unknown in the 1950s – in three dimensions and full colour. For some reason, Cynthia was more stunned by the colour than anything else about the manifestation. The ‘living image’ as she called it, showed a classic flying saucer with flat rim and transparent dome. On its underside there were three half spheres. Appleton commented: “These spaceships were like nothing I have ever seen in my life before. They seemed to take off and hovered in space for two or three seconds, went off to the left, then they went very quickly to the right”.
Cynthia’s crash course in saucer technology included being shown the saucer’s power source – which she drew and later showed to Dr Dale. Her sketch depicted a central hub with a series of curved arms, like spokes. These, she was told, rotated and “collected power” from the atmosphere. She was then informed: “your greatest power is under the sea. It is there in great quantity just for the taking.” The entity also revealed that he was from “Gharnasvarn”, which Earth people called Venus, and that he would return. The holographic TV set then blinked out and, along with the entity, vanished. Appleton told Dr Dale that her visitor “did not seem like a vision, because there was a three-dimensional depth and you could not see through him. He did actually seem to be there.” After he had disappeared, Appleton noticed the entity had been standing on a sheet of discarded newspaper that now had a scorch mark on it. Dale later saw this and noted that it looked like the result of a “lightning strike or small electrical discharge”. Unfortunately, this potentially vital piece of physical evidence was removed by reporters from the Birmingham Evening Gazette and no more was heard of it.
Soon after this initial contact, Appleton was approached by a local clergyman, the Reverend GE Tiley, vicar of Powick, near Worcester. Tiley made several visits to the Appleton household in late 1957 and early 1958, and on 12 January 1958 made her experiences the focus of his Sunday sermon. Tiley’s congregation may have been somewhat surprised when he told them:“If you take the trouble, as I have, to study very deeply, you cannot possibly – if you have an honest, open, sincere mind – review the mass of evidence from all over the world that men other than ourselves exist, and refute that evidence. I believe they do exist, for what it’s worth, and their visits to this Earth are like the Star of Bethlehem.” The vicar continued: “I feel very grateful to have had the chance to sit with her in her kitchen and talk about it. A higher hand than mine led me there. These men told this woman that they have overcome war, poverty and disease and that they had passed through the same stages as we of this world. They came with a message of brotherhood and love. They want to help us.”Rev. Tiley may have believed Cynthia had been visited by spacemen, but the Birmingham Psychic Society had other ideas. BPS spokesman Bernard Payne conducted a lengthy interview with Mrs Appleton, and was convinced she “believed the truth of her story”. Payne planned an experiment in which Mrs Appleton would re-enact her first encounter, repeating exactly the same tasks, at the same time of day, in an effort to recall more details, a technique often used by police in the reconstruction of a crime. To be on the safe side, a medium would be present, as would a tape recorder and a ‘super ray’ machine. Payne commented: “We are not sure what will happen, but I think something is bound to occur. We have open minds on the subject at the moment, but I think the visitation will prove to be of a psychic nature.” Sadly, we are not informed of the results of this experiment, or indeed whether it ever took place.
On 7 January, a few days prior to Tiley’s space sermon, Appleton had received her second visit from the stranger from Venus. Once again, he appeared suddenly, accompanied by a burst of rose-tinged light. But this time he had brought along another entity, whom he described as his ‘superior’. Neither wore helmets, and Appleton could now see her first visitor wore his blond hair at shoulder length whilst his superior had shorter, brown, curly hair. They explained that ‘special brainwaves’ were what enabled their contacts with her, and that their appearances weren’t physical but were a ‘projection’.
On subsequent visits, the visitors had discarded their archetypal space apparel, and instead sported black business suits and homburg hats! They also eschewed materialisation in favour of a more conventional means of transport, arriving by car – a large black one with tinted windows. Shades of the ‘Men in Black’ also permeated their surreal conversations, which veered between the mundane and the miraculous – on one occasion Cynthia was told that their saucer was waiting for them in the vicinity of Edinburgh.
On each of the six or so visits Appleton received during 1958, her Venusian confidants revealed further information about themselves and their beliefs. Jenny Randles, working from Dr Dale’s notes, writes: “She was advised time did not exist. It was a philosophical invention by mankind. We failed to understand that all life was connected at some deep inner level, not separate as we assumed. Detailed scientific facts about the nature of atoms were then conveyed to her. She was told this was the basis to understand how to cure cancer and a complex cure was explained to her which involved changing the vibrational rate of atoms at a sub-atomic level, but Cynthia struggled to remember the terms used when she tried to describe this to Dr Dale.”
Nuclear physics and the sub-atomic world clearly held a special fascination for the Venusians and many conversations revolved around the subject. To the Venusians, science and religion appeared to be synonymous, and they were keen to share their version of the secret of the Universe, telling Cynthia: “The deity itself dwells at the heart and core of the atom”. Heady stuff for an Aston housewife. Cynthia told them it was pointless revealing this type of detailed technical and philosophical knowledge to her, because she simply didn’t understand. The entities disregarded her pleas of ignorance and continued with the visits and the information. What else did they talk to Cynthia about? “Oh, religion, politics, conditions in outer space, racial differences.” Although the entities told Cynthia on many occasions that they were not appearing to her in physical form, on one visit the Venusian said he had burned his hand and, oddly, asked her to bathe it in boiling water, which she did. After he had left, she noticed a piece of skin at the bottom of the bowl. Portions of the skin were later distributed to various ufologists, with one piece apparently being tested ‘by scientists’ at Birmingham University. The tests were, as is the way of these things, inconclusive. The keen blade of science determined the skin wasn’t human – but couldn’t say it was extraterrestrial. The best guess was that it was animal in nature, possibly from a pig. Quite why a university science department couldn’t correctly determine what kind of animal the skin was from isn’t clear. But as with many artifacts alleged to be from space – or fairyland – what appeared to be one thing was, in fact, another entirely. Where does the truth lie? Patrick Kent, a reporter for the Sunday People, asked Cynthia’s four-year-old daughter Susan if she remembered any of the Venusian’s visits. “Yes,” she replied, “I remember Mummy bathing the hand of a man with funny long hair and a fur collar.” Curiouser and curiouser…
Cynthia may have had the support of the Church of England, the Birmingham Psychic Society and the ufologists who took an interest in her case, but contact with interplanetary visitors came at a price, and many of her friends deserted her following the newspaper articles. “Some people are saying I’m a crank, some that I am loose-headed and others that I have been working too hard,” she commented. But she stuck to her guns, insisting her contacts were genuine.
Brinsley le Poer Trench (Lord Clancarty), then editor of Flying Saucer Review, was certain Mrs Appleton’s claims were genuine: “The woman’s story ties up in many respects with what we have learned in the last 10 years from others who have had contact with men from other worlds.” Indeed, it did. Throughout the 1950s, US contactees had been telling their own tales of meeting, talking to, and even taking flights with spacemen from planets within our Solar System, often Venus and Mars. Like Cynthia’s visitors, they were tall, humanoid, communicated by telepathy and traveled in classic, dome-shaped flying saucers, and espoused a philosophy similar to that explained to Cynthia Appleton.
These Venusian values were essentially socialist in nature, tinged with elements now familiar from many New Age philosophies – beliefs quite at odds with the ‘you’ve never had it so good’ capitalism of the 1950s. Contactees were repeatedly told by their mentors that to save Earth from certain disaster, mankind should stop tampering with nuclear forces and live in peace and harmony. Only then would we be included in the Intergalactic Parliament, taking our rightful place among the stars with other highly evolved civilisations. The ‘space brothers’ often illustrated their concerns by showing contactees visions of nuclear and ecological disasters. Cynthia Appleton was shown a vision of two asteroids colliding and causing widespread panic and devastation on Earth. This, she was told, was going to happen soon.
By contactee standards, Cynthia Appleton’s story was just another “girl meets spaceman” account – but when worlds collide, there’s always the chance sparks might fly… and Cynthia’s tale eventually took a turn for the truly bizarre. Once again, the newspapers quickly got hold of the story. This time, it made the national news. On 10 May 1959, a Sunday People headline screamed: “‘I’m going to have a baby from Venus’, says Mrs Cynthia Appleton, of 87 Fentham Road, Aston, Birmingham”. The sub-heading opined: “This is the biggest crackpot statement a woman has ever made”. The People reporter cut straight to the chase and suggested that Cynthia might have been imagining things, to which Mrs Appleton retorted, “but it’s true, and my husband believes it too”. She explained how the man from Venus had given her other predictions and instructions about her as yet undiagnosed pregnancy.
It transpired that the Venusian had called again in September 1958, informing Cynthia that she was “in the state of being with child”. It was news to her, but he was adamant, telling her she would give birth in late May 1959. The child would be a boy and would weigh exactly 7lb 3oz (3.3kg). He would be a leader of men at the age of 14 and he must be called Matthew.(A comment was sent in that said his correct name was Michael.) Shortly after the Venusian’s visit, Cynthia was pronounced pregnant and, with the spaceman’s predictions ringing in her ears, settled down to enjoy her pregnancy, apprehensive as to what might lie ahead.
The Venusians weren’t far off the mark with their prophecies. On 1 June 1959, Cynthia Appleton entered her cosmic confinement, and at two minutes after midnight on 2 June, gave birth. As foretold, the child was a boy with blond hair, weighing in at just a little over 7lb 3oz, almost exactly as the Venusians had predicted. The Appletons called him – what else? – Matthew, and were delighted with their gift from an alien world. Not long after the birth, Cynthia received a telepathic message giving her advance warning that her Venusian friend was going to call again soon, this time with a friend from the planet Uranus. Ron Appleton once again stood by his wife, but issued a stern warning to the visitor from Venus: “I believe everything Cynthia has told me, but I would love to have a yarn with him… If he shows up I’m going to tell him I’m Matthew’s father. If he doesn’t give me the right answers I’ll crack his ‘delicate features’ with a crowbar. His mate from Uranus will get the same.”
Nothing more was heard from the Appletons for over a year. Shortly after Matthew’s first birthday, in 1960, the Empire News ran the headline, “The ‘Venus’ baby is so normal”, reporting that 13-month-old Matthew was doing well, although Mrs Appleton was still at a loss to know what to make of it all. As yet there was no sign of Matthew becoming a leader of men, but Mrs Appleton was keeping a close eye on him. “I don’t know what I expected but I haven’t noticed the slightest thing that could be taken as a sign”, she said. She was also concerned that, since Matthew’s birth, contact with the Venusians had been somewhat sparse. “He used to pop in quite regularly every seven or eight weeks,” she said. “When he left, after forecasting Matthew’s birth, he said he would be looking in again soon. But he never returned. I just can’t make it out.”
And there, in July 1960, the trail goes cold. Newspapers never again mentioned Mrs Appleton or her ‘Venus baby’ and there was no major collision between two asteroids, which the spacemen had predicted. Matthew would have turned 14 on 1 June 1973, the year when he was prophesied to become a ‘leader of men’. History shows that, as yet, he appears not to have taken up this challenge.
Since the early 1960s, UFO publications have often repeated the ‘Venus Baby’ story, but added nothing of relevance to the narrative. I have made every attempt to trace Cynthia and Ron Appleton and their offspring, both terrestrial and extraterrestrial, but to no avail. Despite strong local newspaper interest in the story during 2002 and appeals for information, nothing was forthcoming. A search of the electoral register for the year 2000 showed there was just one Matthew Appleton in the Birmingham area, but he chose not to answer letters or telephone calls. Could it be that this is the correct Matthew Appleton, and that far from being a ‘leader of men’ he is merely embarrassed by his mother’s claims? Or is the real space baby living somewhere else, blissfully ignorant of his cosmic heritage?

MARFA LIGHTS
- I took this picture coming home from work on November 30th 2003 at 7:41pm. I saw a strange cluster of lights in the sky and I stopped to see if I could find out what it was.The lights were huge and bright orange and they were moving in and out of formations very tightly. I flagged down another car to see if someone could say what these were but the man and woman who I talked to were also curious and pulled of the road to watch these lights as they continued to move in formations. I remembered I had my daughters camera and I got into the car and pulled it out to take a picture of it before they ALL VANISHED AT ONE TIME. The objects were very strange and I have no idea what they were.. I know they were not military flares because military flares do not move around in the skies they simply fall to the ground. These lights moved left and right at different speeds and they all seemed to act as if they were all controlled by some source as they would all disappear and reappear at the same time each time in various formations. I snapped this picture of the objects in night vision mode on the camera.
- I was driving on highway 67 just east of Marfa Texas..
- Do you think these were UFOs of some type or could these be the famous Marfa lights?!?
- Thanks for your time

- When I lived in Texas I invited my friend Billy Harris to travel with me to Silver City and Roswell,NM and then on to Phoenix, Arizona.
- On the way back to Texas we decided to go to Van Horn, TX and then down to Marfa to see the lights. On the way Billy noticed that the stars were blacked out above us. We also noticed a light on each corner of "something". We stopped the car and tried to determine what it was; of course we couldn't. We were very excited. We kept driving towards Marfa and on the way we saw an Air Force establishment with a tether holding something above. There was a sign that said "Deadly Force will be used if you pursue coming into the base." That was enough for us! Eventually we arrived in Marfa and the first thing we did was ask someone what that base was for. Everything made sense after we were told it was a dirigible that kept track of illegal aliens coming across the border.
- We stayed in Marfa that evening. Billy wanted to see if he could "catch" one of those lights so he took the car and I went to bed. He said in the morning that every time he got near one it would zoom away. I believe it was the television show "That's Incredible" that did a feature on the lights. They also tried to catch one but to no avail. - Aileen
- THE UNSOLVED MYSTERY OF THE MARFA GHOST LIGHTS
- The Ghost Lights of Marfa still shine as bright as ever, and are still as mysterious as they were when they were first seen by early settlers who drove their herds into the Marfa area in 1883.
- Who can explain their source? Where are they actually located? How long have they been in existence? The mystery is no closer to being solved now than when they were first seen.
- Robert Ellison came to Marfa in 1883 and off-loaded his cattle in Alpine. He then drove the herd west and on the second night out, while camped just this side of Paisano Pass, he saw strange lights in the distance. At first, it was feared that they were Apache Signal Fires. Mr. Ellison searched the countryside by horseback. He finally realized that the lights were not man-made. Other early settlers assured him that they too, had seen the lights and had never been able to identify them.
- The lights appear almost every night. They seem to come from somewhere east of the Chinati Mountains but just where exactly has never been determined. Those who have searched for their source during the day have found nothing! No buildings, no campfires, no evidence of human activity. And no evidence of mineral deposits or Swamp areas.
- The ghost lights appear in different ways to different people. Some swear they have seen them divide and form separate balls of light. Others claim that they have seen them move up and down. All agree that they glow as softly as a star at times then brighten to the intensity of a spotlight. Sometimes they pop off and on. As they fade they seem to be receding. There are verifiable accounts of people being pursued by the lights.
- A Marfa Lights viewing site has been provided for the public on Highway 90 by the Texas Highway Department. It is located nine miles east of Marfa. Ghost light watchers can park in the area and scan the south-western horizon, looking toward Chinati Peak. Using a distant red tower light as a marker, one can be certain that any light to the right of the marker, which appears and disappears, is a Marfa Ghost Light. You will know them when you see them - there is no mistaking them.

MORE CASES FROM THE 1920s
This is the middle of the 1920 cases. I think I have it sorted out now!
According to the Canadian UFO flyer ‘Cuforn Bulletin May-June 1988” an apparent early
abduction incident was reported from Port Burwell, Ontario, Canada one night during the
summer of 1925:
The five-year old witness woke up and felt compelled to go outside into the backyard; she then saw a
large “train-like” craft approaching. It was emitting a loud whining sound. A light approached the
witness and she recalled floating up into the craft. Several small gray beings with large eyes, set far
apart took her gown off. The beings were slender with whitish gray skin, large heads, and bulging eyes and were wearing tight fitting satin like outfits. She is later floated up and apparently examined with various instruments. She is eventually released.
This is an apparent very early abduction event describing what appeared to be the typical
modern day ‘gray’ humanoids. Later that same summer the same witness reported another
similar incident at the same location but involving somewhat different appearing beings:
The witness was lying on the grass outside when she saw a flat silvery disc land nearby; several beings with wrinkled yellow skin came out. She was then apparently taken inside the craft and given a ride. The disc flew at a very high altitude and the witness was returned later.
According to the Swedish UFO publication UFO-Aktuellt 3/1983 page 39, sometime between
September 20 through September 30 1925, between 630 a.m. and 630 a.m. a strange
encounter which I classified as of high strangeness, occurred, the following is the summary of
the event:
On an early Sunday morning the 8-year old witness had gotten up and gotten up and gone out into the
surrounding area near his home when he found himself in a small country lane. He had no definite
goal. It was already bright and the weather was fine. When he came down to a bridge that crossed a
creek he looked up out over the area and saw something reminiscent of two deep saucers facing each
other. This phenomenon was big as a car and blackish gray in color, stood on four legs in a field, which a few days earlier had been harvested for potatoes.
He doesn’t know how long he watched the strange object when he saw something that looked like a
rope ladder being hauled into a gap in the craft, the legs were retracted and the ring that went around
the object began rotating around faster and faster, and the craft rose slowly to the side with a faint
whirring noise. He did not see any living creatures. He was then seized by a strange fear and felt
uncomfortable. He ran quickly home and told his parents what he had seen, but was met with
skepticism. He also spoke about it to his best friend and her mother but was ridiculed.
The rope ladder hanging down from an open hatch implies that there were apparently
entities inside the object either getting ready to exit when interrupted by the witness or just
returning to their craft.
In a 1984 article in ‘Fate’ magazine, authors Rob McGregor and Trish Janeshutz recount an
extremely bizarre and improbable tale occurring sometime in the year 1926 near the location
of Ancud, southern Chile, without going into any speculations I will present the following
narrative from the article:
The 18-year old brother of Marcelino Zaldivia was sleeping one night on the porch when he
disappeared and was not found until Easter week of 1976 when Marcelino, feeling nostalgic about his
lost brother visited their old home on the banks of the Rio Pudeto. There seated in the living room
and dressed as he’d been half a century earlier, was his brother, now old and evidently demented.
When Marcelino asked where he’d been all those years, the man replied only that he’d been on a
‘boat’ and implored him not to ask anything more. When a woman named Elena Vera Guerrero asked
him about it, he shook his head and said, “They hear everything.”
This area of southern Chile has been the scene of numerous other bizarre and similar tales.
Whatever happened to the unfortunate 18-year old perhaps will never be known, I do
wonder who he meant when he said, “They hear everything.”
Seasoned Polish researchers Bronislaw Rzepecki and Marcin Mioduszewski provided me with
an interesting case from the area of Ujazd, Poland said to have occurred one afternoon in
September of 1926. The case both involved a disc and related entities:
The witness (Zofia) was alone in a meadow grazing three cows when she suddenly turned around and
saw three gray discs (about 2 meters in diameter) hovering just above the ground and three strange
entities standing in front of them. There was total silence. All three objects had something resembling
opened doors. The humanoids were less than 120-130 cm tall, maybe about 80 cm, and wore dark
green suits and something like belts or ropes around their waists. She was unable to see any hair or
facial features as the humanoids stood about 100 meters away staring at her. Very scared she began
running away. She briefly turned around and everything was gone.
From French researchers Joel Mesnard & Michel Morel Seythoux we get a brief summary mentioned in the UFO magazine FSR Vol. 37 # 1 of a case which would have been labeled as a CE3 type ‘A’ (occupants seen within UFO) using modern UFO research classifications:
Location. La Combe De Morbier, Jura, France
Date: Winter 1926
A woodcutter reported seeing a large brightly lit sphere hovering at treetop level, several figures,
human-like in appearance could be seen inside the object. These apparently ignored the witness.
Time: evening
Quoting Italian UFO researcher Paolo Fiorino in UFO Universe another CE3 type ‘A’ incident
was reported sometime in 1927, one morning, in Corbola, Rovigo, Italy:
One morning while a 12-year old girl was going to fetch drinking water at the River Po she saw a shiny and round object come from the sky, it later crashed in the water seven meters away from her. After a couple of minutes, the witness noticed a big bubble in the water and later the object resurfaced and flew away disappearing in the sky. The girl had the chance to observe the interior of the object and saw a little man who seemed to be seated because he was only visible from the neck and above. The facial features were human looking and he was not wearing a helmet. The object, which emitted a hissing noise, had a diameter of 2-3 meters.
Researcher and author Jacques Vallee illustrates another similar case in his book
“Confrontations, a scientist’s search for alien contact” the following is a summary of this very
interesting case:
Location.
Date: late April 1928
Harry Dillon was driving along an unpaved country road when as he reached the top of a slight rise he saw an object slowly coming into the view. The object was described as resembling a metallic hexagon with a dome on top, olive drab in color. The witness could see rivets along a vertical section and a two by three foot window set in a metallic frame. In the window he could see the upper torso of a man dressed in a dark blue uniform. The man had a dark complexion and was totally human-like. He looked intently in the direction of the witness’s car, and then the object rotated, flew across the road, and shot away at terrific speed.

Long time English researcher Norman Oliver shared with us in Quest UFO Magazine Vol. 11 #
4 a humanoid sans UFO encounter said to have occurred on November of 1928 one late
evening in Bolton, Lancashire, England:
A young boy, Henry Thomson, playing with a gang of friends was running through a dark alley when
he saw in the backyard of a house three strange figures peering into a lighted living room. The central
figure was tallest; it turned and looked at the witness. He mumbled at the other two and they all
turned. A wide black eyepiece divided down the center by a ribbed silver piece covered the face of the tall entity. All three appeared to be wearing inflatable rubber suits with dark boots. On their heads
were transparent dome-like helmets. Tubes came from these and joined tanks that were on their
backs. They had pale heads shaped like light bulbs, slit-like eyes, scarcely any nose, and no visible
mouth. One made a strange noise, and all three began to move toward the boy. He ran away from the
area in terror.
One of the strangest incidents of this roaring decade was said to have taken place one
morning sometime in 1929 in Hertford, England. The incident is summarized by researchers
and authors Janet and Colin Bord in “Modern Mysteries of Britain”. It definitely involves a
humanoid and an ‘unorthodox’ conveyance to say the least:
A sister, 5, and brother, 8, were playing in the garden one morning, at that date the road was a lane,
with just two pairs of houses, one of which was theirs, and behind the houses there was an orchard.
As they played, they heard the sound of an engine---years later the sister would likened it to a quiet
version of a trainer plane. Her brother and her looked up and saw, coming over the garden fence from
the orchard, this small aeroplane (of biplane type) which swooped down and landed briefly, almost
striking a dustbin. It remained there for possibly just a few seconds and then took off and was gone,
but in that short the girl had a perfect view of the tiny biplane but also of a perfectly proportioned
tiny pilot wearing a leather flying helmet, who waved to them as he took off. Neither she nor her
brother spoke of the strange sight until years later. She estimated the wing-span of the tiny aircraft at
no more than 12-15 inches, with the tiny pilot in perfect proportion thereto.
A more ‘mundane’ incident (if there is such a word in the world of humanoid encounters) was
given to me by veteran Brazilian researcher Antonio Faleiro from Passa Tempo Minas Gerais.
It consists of brief but very interesting details of an incident said to have occurred in 1929 (no
specific month) in the town of Paraguaco, Minas Gerais Brazil:
One night a large shiny white metallic craft with several window-like apertures was seen on the
ground. Two giant humanoid figures about 2.50 meters in height stood next to the object. These wore
silvery outfits and brown boots and gloves. No other information.
In his excellent book “When saucers came to Earth” Italian researcher and author Maurizio
Verga gives us the following very ‘high strangeness’ report:
Location. Roccagloriosa, Salerno, Italy
Date: summer 1929
A girl was working in a field when she looked up and saw a stationary ball
of white light in the sky. This then descended vertically, stopping just a few
centimeters above the ground, while descending the ball greatly dimmed
creating a sort of “opening” in the center of the sphere. After 5 or 10 seconds,
a female figure emerged from the opening wearing sumptuous black garments,
“like those from the 19th century”. Inside of the ball, 2 or 3 small beings
moved slowly and peered outward. The female figure walked toward the
witness, without her feet touching the ground. Thereafter, she turned left and
was lost in some trees. The girl was frightened and made the sign of the cross.
She then ran to call her father. When he arrived at the landing site, he
smelled the fragrance of roses.
Time: 1400
There seems to be a combination of unusual factors in this case. The female entity could have
been interpreted as a type of ‘Marian’ vision, the small beings unfortunately are not
described, but in modern terms they could represent ‘aliens’. The fragrance of roses at the
site is also interesting, which tips the balance to the Marian vision hypothesis. Whatever took
place was definitely out of the ordinary.
According to French Canadian UFO researcher Henri Bourdeleau on or about June 15 1929 at
Fermeneuve, Quebec, Canada what appears to have been a close encounter of the third kind
took place:
Louis Brosseau, riding home to Fermeneuve, saw on a hillside a sort of black “cloud” with a yellowish light coming from within. Approaching on foot to within 150 ft, he saw it to be a dark object on the ground; he could indistinctly see, in the darkness, 4 or 5 small “yellowish” colored men running around in a 20-foot radius. The dark object rose & passed over him at about 50 mph, “purring like a milk separator,” with a rush of air; coming from it he heard 2 voices as if in argument. The object was about 50 ft in diameter, with windows “lit like the moon,” and with black protuberances 3 ft apart all around the circumference.
Quoting an entry on the NUFORC site (National UFO reporting center) we learn of an alleged
incident said to have taken place one afternoon on July 5 1929 near Burns, Oregon:
The witnesses were traveling east of town climbing up through a cut in the rim rocks when an object,
very slowly flew over the top of the car, about 50 ft above the rim rock. The object stopped and
through a transparent window the witnesses could see two completely human-like figures that
appeared to be pointing down at them using their arms and hands. One of the witnesses stepped out
of the car but his mother demanded that he get back in. He stood on the running board observing the
craft, which was two tones of brown. The craft, which had windows in the middle section, hovered for about 40 seconds emitting a soft hum. One of the figures then moved to another window and the
craft suddenly accelerated and was gone in a blink of an eye.

THE FORGOTTEN CASES - FROM ALBERT ROSALES
(I think the last blog I sent you was the final one. This is the first part. Sorry about that.)
The Forgotten humanoid and other encounters of the roaring 20’s.
During those turbulent times in between the two World Wars, right
before the Wall Street Crash and the beginning of the Depression, there were little known and mostly hidden encounters with ‘strangers’ among us.
For various reasons, I suspect mainly because of witness reluctance and faltering memories,
many of the encounters reported from 1920 through 1929 were mainly ignored and poorly
documented. But there is a core of incidents that appear to mirror what was going to occur in
the not too distant future. I will attempt to cover some of the least known incidents reported
during the time, not only ‘humanoid’ encounters but other high-strangeness events.
Sometime in 1920 a strange series of events took place in Bass Strait, Victoria, Australia. The
following narrative is directly taken from veteran Australian UFO researcher Bill Chalker article:
“UFOs sub-rosa down under: The Australian Military & Government role in the UFO controversy.”
“The Navy submarine depot ship, the Platypus, was involved in the search for a missing
schooner, the Amelia J., in Bass Strait. Mystery lights, thought at the time to be “evidently rockets,”
were observed. Two aircraft left the flying training school and aircraft depot at Point Cook to join in
the investigation. One was piloted by a Major Anderson and the other by Captain W. J. Stutt – an
instructor for the NSW Government Aviation School at Richmond…Stutt and his mechanic, Seargent
Dalzell, were last seen by Major Anderson flying into a large cloud. Their plane and the schooner
were never found.”
Figure 2. Australian researcher Bill Chalker.
Interesting account, what were those lights reported during the search for the schooner, what kind of a
cloud was it that the search aircraft fly into and never came out? I suspect we will never know these
answers. The area (Bass Strait) is a well known area for Australian anomaly researchers, where UFOs,
strange disappearances and other high strangeness incidents have been frequently reported. This case is
what I call perhaps a ‘permanent abduction’.
According to Ukrainian researcher, Dr. Anton Anfalov (he quotes UFO Liaisons of the Universe, Lugansk,
Ukraine) in the year 1920 during the bloody Russian Civil War and somewhere not specified in the
Crimean Peninsula a strange event took place:
A mobile Red Army group was moving along a local road in the rugged mountains of the Crimean
Peninsula. There were a total of five soldiers including one woman. They were moving in a cart wagon
and were armed with rifles and “Maksim” machine guns. Suddenly they noticed a lighted area on the
side of the road and then stopped near the road prepared their weapons and began to check the area.
They soon came upon a strange dome-shaped object on the ground and several tall figures walking
near the object. The figures were described as dressed in a kind of armored suit, resembling
chainmaille, The figures were about 2 meters in height, or taller. Thinking that these were foreign
enemies the group prepared to fire upon the strangers with their Maksim machine guns but were
suddenly blinded by a bright flash of light and knocked down losing consciousness. When they
returned to their senses again, the object and the strange figures had disappeared.
Another interesting event, one that it would have been classified as a CE3 in modern
‘Ufological’ parlance, the action taken in the part of the unknown entities was apparently a self
defense action. It is unfortunate that there is not a more precise location provided for this
extremely high strangeness event.
Figure 3. Luminous entities
According to veteran French researchers Joel Mesnard and Jean Marie Bigorne sometime
during the summer of 1920 near the town of Nontron in the Dordogne region of France the
following peculiar event took place:
On a Saturday evening, between 2300 and midnight, a group of young people was returning from a
dance when they saw in the sky, above a little wood, a strange spectacle; a group of beings of small
stature about in the air, and giving off “musical sounds.” The young people could see their little legs
move about, and noticed that surroundings the figures were a number of luminous balls that gave to
the group a “fiery aspect.” According to the accounts of two of the group, Louise and Marie Grasset,
they felt no fear at the strange sight.
It appears to have been an encounter with a sort of luminous and flying entity. The ‘musical
sounds’ reported is interesting as there have been many similar reports throughout the years
in which ‘musical tones’ have been connected with the appearance of UFOs and strange
entities.
According to published reports in the UFO electronic magazines, UFO Roundup Vo. 7 # 28 and
Filer’s Files (unknown volume) a ‘classic’ close encounter of the third kind took place in
September 1920 outside of Bethel North Carolina, the following is a summary of events:
Figure 4. Typical disc shaped UFO.
During the local cotton harvest 14-year laborer Nicora B. and her family were out in the fields plucking
the white bolls from the cotton plants and stuffing them in their trailing tote sacks when they saw
something large flying over the farm. They described it as an object resembling two pie pans placed
together lip to lip. The silvery object zigzagged across the sky and came to rest in the field in front of
the witnesses. Two little bald white men got out and pointed short stick-like implements at them.
They were the size of little boys but their faces seemed older. One of the little bald men began digging
and poking in the dirt with something like a shovel and put some dirt into a bag. He then took a small
plant and placed it in the bag also. Both little men then backed up one after the other and entered the
pie-pan shaped object, still pointing the sticks at them as they walked backwards. Presently the UFO
took off and zigzagged back in the direction it came.
In later decades hundreds if not thousands of similar events were to be reported, supposed
aliens collecting samples from the ground, also humanoids carrying stick-like implements.
Like I mentioned earlier I will be covering different types of encounters with all sorts of
humanoids during this time period, not all necessarily connected with a ‘UFO’ the following
case is an example.
According to the Fortean Times website (1993) sometime in 1921 at an unspecified location in
Hertfordshire, England the following encounter took place:
During daytime a man was driving down a rural road with nothing going on, when he spotted a
roadside tree stump up ahead. Sitting on the stump was a small (18” high) round-face being with a
pointed cap which slouched over to one side. Before being able to secure a better look, the being was
no longer there.
Of course this case can be classified as an encounter with a fairy, leprechaun, goblin, etc. Is
there a different between this sort of encounter and the landing of a disc-shaped craft from
which several short humanoids emerge and begin collecting soil samples? At first sight the
answer is no, but maybe there are more similar in nature than we think.
One of the earliest abduction type-scenario-incident was reported by several French Ufologists
among them, Joel Mesnard and Jean-Marie Bigorne, this case was said to have taken place in
the French city of Marseille in the Bouches du Rhone region it apparently took place one
afternoon in the summer of 1921 the following is a condensed narrative of the event:
“In 1921---a very hot year---I was playing one day among the hills of the North Canal. I was eight years
old and I love to lose myself in the moonlike landscape made by excavation, and from the First World
War. “Suddenly, two beings, wearing a sort of pliable helmet, literally leaped out from between some
acacia trees. Without preliminaries, they dragged me toward what I thought was an oddly shaped
tank. They took me up into the machine, without my being able to resist. I should say, ‘Without my
being able to want to resist.’ I suddenly began to cry; and I don’t know whether that moved them, but
after a while an opening appeared in the ceiling of the cabin, and in a few seconds I found myself on
the ground. “However, I had to walk most of the afternoon until I found myself near the road I had
left five minute before. “ When I got home that night, my parents treated me like a little liar, and no
one believed me. I can now hardly add much detail to the machine, or its cabin. Doubtless, I was too
astounded. I only remember two details; there were square or at least rectangular portholes. The
cabin had a kind of soft couch that I sat on.” I seem to recall that their helmets appeared metallic. I
don’t recall any anatomical details, except that the two beings were very tall and very slender.”
A bizarre tale to be sure and a rather crude abduction scenario, obviously the young witness
was let go by his strange abductors, but there is no further details available.
From veteran UFO/Bigfoot researcher, Peter Guttilla from his book ‘The Bigfoot File’ we have
the following event said to have taken place one night in August of 1921 in the area of Mount
Shasta, California, it includes some interesting details however brief the narrative is:
Elberta Payne was lying sick at her grandmother’s home when she saw two large black “furry
creatures” with large eyes, watching her through the bedroom window. Almost immediately she
recovered from what was thought to have been typhoid fever.
The apparent spontaneous healing of the witness following the encounter is interesting to
say the least since we have hundreds of similar events involving alleged healings after UFO
encounters.
Figure 5. Flying humanoid.
Renowned international researcher Jacques Vallee introduced us to one of the earliest reports of a flying
humanoid in connection to a UFO. The event reportedly took place at five o’clock in the morning on
February 22 1922 in an area near Hubbell Nebraska:
A hunter, William C. Lamb, was following mysterious tracks when he heard a crackling noise followed
by a high-pitched sound & realized that a circular object was flying overhead. He hid behind a tree &
saw this object, now brilliantly lighted, land in a hollow. Soon afterward a “magnificent” flying
creature at least 8 ft tall appeared that landed like an airplane & left traces in the snow. It passed by
the tree & disappeared; Lamb followed the tracks for 5 miles before giving up.
Stunning case, it was later reported that Mr. Lamb was involved in other encounters and
appeared to have been a ‘repeater’ witness.
Another very high strangeness case allegedly took place during another civil war, this time the
Irish Civil War and it is said to have taken place one early morning in April of 1922 in County
Donegal, Ireland. According to the INTCAT listing quoting the Watford and South Herts Post of
April 30 1964 this is a brief summary of what allegedly took place:
During the Irish civil war, soldier Lawrence Bradley came to a cave, the foliage at the entrance of
which was burned. Soldiers sheltering inside said they had been awakened in the early morning by a
‘whirring’ sound, and fired at an object. The object fired jets of fire at the cave. As the soldiers
emerged the object, circular and metallic, was beginning to ascend.
Strange indeed, did the exhausted soldiers perhaps mistake at tank (early version) for a more
unconventional craft? However the fact that it was reportedly ‘ascending’ does not make it a
mundane object.
From veteran researchers Ron Westrum and Ted Bloecher we have a more ‘typical’ (if that is
possible) CE3 event from the summer of 1922 said to have taken place around 22:00 in the city
of Detroit Michigan:
Mrs. Irma Hinz was walking home from a movie with a young friend when the two teenagers saw a
large disk shaped object hovering over a vacant lot on Dragoon Avenue. The sky suddenly lit up and
the object descended to the height of a large tree and slowly revolved as it hovered, around the
perimeter of the bottom of the object were rectangular windows, lit from within; seated at these
windows were approximately 20 entities that were seen only from the shoulders/neck up. They were
bald headed, with eyes set close together, and they were staring intently at the young couple. No
other features were observed, Mrs. Hinz and her date watched for several minutes, but left quickly
when they became frightened. Although Mrs. Hinz told her parents at the time, her mother tended to
believe it was a “vision” of some kind. She recalls her date’s name as William O’Brien.
According to Len Wells from the Evansville Courier there was another typical close encounter of
the third kind one afternoon in June of 1923 near the town of Mount Erie Illinois, the witness
being a 10-year old boy named Norman Massie, following is a summary of the incident:
Norman Massie was 10-year old when he went out to take his horses into a pasture. As he led his
horses through the gate he noticed an object with lights all around it nearby. He walked to within 50
feet of the object and noticed five men onboard the craft. He described the men as about 4 ft tall with
blond hair. As he got closer he could hear them talking. One of the men sat on a chair, & the others
called him the “Commander”. The other men made trips back & forth into the object. Massie then
overhead one of the men tell the commander that the repairs had been made. The object was
described as metallic and standing on three legs. It had a dome on top with holes in it. The top of the
object resembled melted glass. The object then rose up and hovered & the tripod legs telescoped up
into the belly of the craft, which went straight up then shot away towards the west at high speed.
Several Spanish Ufologists including Antonio Ribera unearthed a very strange incident said to
have occurred one afternoon in 1924 near the small town of Quero in La Mancha region, Spain.
The incident involves a lone humanoid without the presence of a UFO but using some kind of
‘apparatus’ in order to get around:
Figure 6. Depiction of humanoid maneuvering over a field.
The witness was standing near a local rural church when he saw a short humanoid figure about 1.20
meters in height wearing a tight-fitting green colored coverall, it had its arms and legs in a rigid
position and approached to within 2 meters of the witness. The humanoid seemed to have both feet
together and resting on some type of circular platform that apparently propelled him above the
ground. On his hands he carried an object or control panel that seemed to operate the floating
platform. The humanoid, which had human features, disappeared silently into some distance fields.
The late and groundbreaking Ufologist John Keel (John Alva Kiehl) reported a bizarre possible
crash & retrieval case which involved strange characters, perhaps precursors of the modern day
M.I.B. The incident is said to have occurred one afternoon in May of 1924 near the small town
of Gem, West Virginia:
A farmer outside Gem in monster haunted Braxton County reported seeing an ‘airplane’ crash in a
forest. Planes were a very rare sight in those days especially in West Virginia, and a crashing plane
was big news. According to the farmer, the plane was very odd in that it didn’t seem to have any
wings, didn’t make any noise and seemed unusually large. “As big as a battleship” is the way the
farmer described it. A party of men, including the local sheriff and local newsman John Cole
systematically searched the woods. Within hours they found the wreck in a small clearing. According
to Cole:
“We weren’t the first ones there, though. There were already five or six men in the clearing. Some of
them were dressed in black business suits, neckties and all, and that seemed damned silly in that neck
of the woods”. Others were dressed in coveralls of a funny color---some kind of very shiny material.
They were talking among themselves in a rapid-fire foreign language when they found them. They got
real excited when they saw the search party. The men in coveralls ran into the wreck---like they were
trying to hide. Some of the men in the search party were carrying guns and one of them said to Cole,
“By God, they’re spies!” and he raised his gun. The strangers were all small, just a little over five feet
tall, and they all looked like Orientals, with high cheekbones, slanted eyes, and dark skin. One of them
spoke English. He told the men nobody was hurt, that everything was all right. He said he would call
on the sheriff later and make out a complete report. There wasn’t much they could do. No crime had
been committed. Nobody was hurt.
According to Cole while he was looking around he spotted a ‘little thingamajig” on the ground. He
picked it up and decided to keep it. He doesn’t know why he just didn’t turn it over to one of
“foreigners”. He put it in his pocket. They all finally went away, leaving the foreigners to fuss with
their contraption. It didn’t look like much of a flying machine. It face, Cole didn’t think it could fly at
all. It was like a fuselage of a modern plane, with windows and all. But it didn’t have any wings, tail or
propellers. And like the farmer said, it was mighty big. According to Cole at least seventy five feet
long, it filled the whole clearing.
He went back home in Weston and went right to bed. He was pretty tired from all the day’s hiking.
About three a. m. somebody started pounding on his door. He got up and looked and there was an
army officer standing there. He was dressed in one of those broad-brimmed hats they used to wear,
with those leg wrappings and all. It was a U.S. Army uniform, but except for his clothes he looked just
like those foreigners from the airplane. Slant eye, dark skin, but he was maybe a little taller. ‘You
picked up something today,’ he said. ‘We need it back.’ Cole was half asleep and at first he couldn’t
think what he meant. Then he remembered the metal ‘thingamajig” It was still in his coat pocket. Cole
went and got it. “Is this what you mean?” He asked him. He didn’t answer; he just grabbed it and
walked off without a word. He didn’t, seem to have a horse or a car. Cole shuffled back to bed. But
the next day he started wondering about it. How had the supposed officer managed to track him
down? A couple of days later he went back to those woods and found that clearing. It was empty. The
grass and bushes were all crushed down where the airplane had been but there was no other sign of
anything or anybody. After the Army ‘officer’ came by Cole figured that maybe it was a secret Army
deal of some kind and he thought it was better to leave it alone.
Another report describing a ‘little man’ carrying a sort of stick was reported by author and
researcher Graham J. McEwan in his book “Mystery animals of Great Britain and Ireland” said
to have occurred in Cranagh, County Carlow, Ireland one afternoon in November of 1924. The
following is a summary of the events:
A young girl was standing by a farmyard gate tending some cows when she saw a little man appear
from behind one of the cows. He walked quickly and tapped one of the cows gently on the nose with a
stick he was carrying. He walked by the witness, staring at her, and then walked straight into a bank
of solid earth and vanished. He was described as four foot tall, young looking, & wearing a black cap, a
red coat, and tight trousers.

Interesting account, what were those lights reported during the search for the schooner, what kind of a

answers. The area (Bass Strait) is a well known area for Australian anomaly researchers, where UFOs,

which several short humanoids emerge and begin collecting soil samples?
