The Catastrophe

The Catastrophe. The world-engulfing cataclysm. The memory of it, the dread of it, is still stamped on the collective unconscious of every Indian soul. Myth and legend tell of the last one, whenever it happened, followed by days of darkness and emptiness before the gods assembled to create a new sun. Predictions and prophecies tell of the one to come. Not only those of the Nahuas and Mayas, but that of the contemporary Hopis who believe the end of the world as we know it is not far off. The time will be marked when Saquasohuh, the Blue Star kachina, dances in the plaza. Far off and still invisible, the blue star will make its appearance soon.

According to Hopi prophecy, the previous worlds were destroyed when their inhabitants became corrupt. The present world is now also corrupt and will be destroyed; only those people who return to their original teachings will escape destruction....

On Second Mesa...an ancient petroglyph depicts a dome-shaped object resting on an arrow which represents travel through space, and the head of a Hopi maiden who represents pristine purity. As the Hopi believe the other planets are inhabited, this petroglyph represents a patuwvota, a “flying shield” similar to a “flying saucer” that came here in the Beginning. So now at the End the sacred ones will arrive from another planet by flying saucers. Many Hopi traditionalists recently have reported seeing flying saucers, all piloted by the beings they call kachinas.

The current Hopi belief brings us back again to the Mesoamerican myth of the catastrophic destruction of previous worlds. Were they all caused by planetary aberrations, refuting our belief in an unalterably ordered solar system? Or were catastrophic disorders in both heaven and earth governed by laws of universal order?

Despite the violent changes that have continuously altered its surface, the Earth is the same organic entity, the “divine creature” as Plato called it. So has it been with mankind. Violent cataclysms have not obliterated it. Mankind has adapted itself to the changes. Races have vanished. One primitive culture, one civilization, arises and falls, to be replaced by another. But mankind remains. If terrestrial catastrophes have often altered the course of human history, all decisive changes in mankind’s development have not been dependent upon them. Rather have they been determined by what seems to be the periodic synchronization of human and cosmic rhythms. Of this periodicity we know little, the scope of the periods is so large. We can only surmise that the physical changes in the surface of the earth and the psychological changes in mankind must be parallel phenomena determined by their coincidence in time. This is why myth, the oldest and most holy witness of the human spirit, is so relevant. It reveals the hidden world that has never faded from human consciousness and bridges the gap between physical and psychical realities.

Frank Waters (1902-1995) was one of the greatest writers to come out of the American West. He wrote often with a deep spiritual dimension drawn from his experiences among the native people of the Southwest.
